Ice Skating in Highlands NC, Favorite Winter Activity

Ice skating in Highlands NC is a favorite winter activity. Colder weather in the mountain, combined with the holiday season brings a certain magic to the town. Our mountain community is blessed with a fabulous outdoor rink and now is the season that it comes alive with laughter, joy, and good old-fashioned fun!

Location and schedule

The Highlands ice rink is located in Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park. Skating takes place on Thursdays from 3:30 to 8:00 pm, Fridays from 3:30 to 10:00 pm, Saturdays from 1:00 to 10:00 pm, and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. You can bring your own skates or rent them at the rink. The cost to skate is $5, whether you bring your skates or rent them. Additionally, coffee and hot cocoa are for sale.

Have your own skating party

The rink can be rented for private events and private parties can be scheduled for 6 to 8 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays when the rink is not open to the public. Renting and reserving the rink should be completed two weeks in advance. Call 828-526-3556 to book. Ice skating is fun for all ages. Mark Your Calendar for the Highlands NC Christmas Parade

Mark your calendar for the annual Highlands NC Christmas Parade. This fun and festive event will take place on Saturday, December 3. This fun event is treasured by the community and attracts visitors from near and far. Homemade floats, a marching band or two, and Santa are the big draw, getting everyone on the Plateau in the holiday spirit. All ages return year after year to Downtown Highlands NC to enjoy this magical kick-off to the Christmas season!

Get your viewing spot early!

The parade takes place from 10:30 am to noon and many people arrive early to set up camp, ensuring a prime viewing spot. The parade route is along Main Street and front-row viewing is coveted. This community parade will not disappoint. Local civic groups, non-profits, churches, businesses, fire departments, and many additional integral members of the Highlands NC community participate and their passion for the event is evident.  Additionally, participants in the parade will be tossing candy to the crowd.

Sense of community

The annual Christmas parade demonstrates the sense of community and camaraderie that pervades our mountain town. The smiles on the faces of the onlookers and the participants alike are contagious. What can you expect to see? A marching band, horses, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, fire trucks, classic cars, and more. One highlight of the parade is the dancing ladies of the Highlands Garden Club.  Of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus are the royalty of the parade.

Friday Night Live is free music for the community in Highlands NC. This wonderful tradition is enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. It is a chance to enjoy live music outside in the beautiful summer weather. Additionally, Friday Night Live is a summer event that is treasured more than ever since COVID kept many activities like this at bay. These free concerts feature traditional mountain music and take place from 6 to 8 pm at Highlands Town Square and run through the end of October.

The market takes place from 8 am to 12:30 pm on Saturdays at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park on Pine Street. Here you can find locally grown produce, meats, dairy, baked goods, honey, jams, flowers, salves, soaps, crafts, and more. The Highlands Plateau benefits greatly from the fresh fare and creative local goods that enhance an active and outdoorsy lifestyle.

Eat well all week long

You could easily plan your meals for the week and enjoy fresh local food for every meal of the day. Whether you choose eggs and pastries for breakfast, bread and cheese for snacks, or some farm raised meats and great fresh salad makings for dinner, you will not be disappointed. Of course, the opportunity to purchase locally made goods offers endless gifts for those looking to bring something home for friends and family as well.

Winter in Highlands NC offers a variety of activities and ice skating is a fun option for all ages. The outdoor rink seems extra magical at this time of year and a place where giggles, cheers, and smiles abound. There is no doubt that ice skating is at the top of the list of winter activities in the Highlands area, as true for the accomplished skater as for a never-ever.

Things to know before you go

Location: Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park.
Days/Times: Thursdays 1 to 8 pm, Fridays & Saturdays 1 to 10 pm, and Sundays 1 to 5 pm.
Skate Rentals: Ice skates can be rented at the rink.
Cost: $5, whether you bring your own skates or rent them.
Additional: coffee and hot cocoa are available

The Highlands Writers Group has been a staple for both professional and amateur writers for a number of years. Typically this group meets monthly but the pandemic has put a pause on in-person meetings. However, the winter is typically a time spent writing away.

A group for everyone

Everyone with a creative interest can find a place in the Highlands Plateau. Whether you are a knitter, a wood-turner, a painter, or a potter, there is a place for you! Additionally, newcomers are always welcome. Whether a person is a seasoned professional or a complete novice, there are opportunities to explore creative passions. The Highlands NC community can learn about nature. In fact, there are multiple opportunities to learn about the environment, plants, and animals that make our area home. People are drawn to the Highlands Plateau because of the great outdoors and the lifestyle the mountains afford. Learning about the area adds to our appreciation. The Highlands Biological Station is one entity that helps residents and visitors alike learn more about nature.

What is the Highlands Biological Station?

The Highlands Biological Station is a fabulous amenity for the community that enables visitors to learn, students to study, and research to be conducted. It is a research and teaching laboratory, a nature center, botanical gardens, and a foundation. The station protects the environment and helps foster an appreciation for the natural environment that exists in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains. Classes run the gamut, from learning about mushrooms to learning about birds and everything in between.

Gardens open during COVID

In-person classes are canceled this summer due to COVID but there are online classes available. Additionally, the Botanical Gardens are open for anyone who would like to wander through and learn on their own. The gardens demonstrate the unique and diverse flora of our area. The trail network is open from dawn to dusk every day and is free. This is a great way to get familiar with the true beauty and natural wonder of the Highlands NC area.

Where is Secret Falls?

The falls are very close to Downtown, a short half-mile hike that starts at a trailhead off of Walking Stick Road. You can find Walking Stick Road as you head east out of Downtown Highlands NC on Horse Cove Road, the right-hand turn is approximately 4 miles east of town. The hike will lead you to the top of the falls, which offers a stunning view of the multi-tiered falls and the swimming hole below. The Secret Falls hike is clearly marked. While close to town, this hike will make you feel miles away.

Winter in Highlands NC is a great time for photos. The natural beauty of our area takes on a different life during the winter. Capturing the environment through a camera can become a passion. Luckily there is a photo contest going on now to submit your fantastic photos! The Laurel Magazine’s annual photo contest is taking place to find a photo for its 2021 Winter edition. So, if you love taking photos in the Highlands NC area get out and start clicking away!

The 2021 Laurel Winter Photo Contest is accepting photos through March 31, 2020. All ages and all ability levels can enter. The only requirement is that photos be taken in the Highlands-Cashiers area and that they are submitted in a high-resolution format. All of the photos will be posted on the Laurel Magazine’s Facebook page and viewers are able to vote for their favorites.

Highlands and Cashiers NC provides a beautiful backdrop for any photo. The annual contest is a great opportunity to take advantage of your favorite natural setting. Whether you capture the frost, the snow, the trees, or a panoramic view of the mountains, your lens will undoubtedly see the beauty that draws so many to our area.
