Mark your calendar for the annual Highlands NC Christmas Parade. This fun and festive event will take place on Saturday, December 3. This fun event is treasured by the community and attracts visitors from near and far. Homemade floats, a marching band or two, and Santa are the big draw, getting everyone on the Plateau in the holiday spirit. All ages return year after year to Downtown Highlands NC to enjoy this magical kick-off to the Christmas season!

Get your viewing spot early!

The parade takes place from 10:30 am to noon and many people arrive early to set up camp, ensuring a prime viewing spot. The parade route is along Main Street and front-row viewing is coveted. This community parade will not disappoint. Local civic groups, non-profits, churches, businesses, fire departments, and many additional integral members of the Highlands NC community participate and their passion for the event is evident.  Additionally, participants in the parade will be tossing candy to the crowd.

Sense of community

The annual Christmas parade demonstrates the sense of community and camaraderie that pervades our mountain town. The smiles on the faces of the onlookers and the participants alike are contagious. What can you expect to see? A marching band, horses, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, fire trucks, classic cars, and more. One highlight of the parade is the dancing ladies of the Highlands Garden Club.  Of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus are the royalty of the parade.

The Highlands NC farmers market, the Highlands Marketplace, is a great place to be on Saturdays all summer long. The market takes place from 8 am to 12:30 pm on Saturdays at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park on Pine Street. Here you can find locally grown produce, meats, dairy, baked goods, honey, jams, flowers, salves, soaps, crafts, and more. The Highlands Plateau benefits greatly from the fresh fare and creative local goods that enhance an active and outdoorsy lifestyle.

Eat well all week long

You could easily plan your meals for the week and enjoy fresh local food for every meal of the day. Whether you choose eggs and pastries for breakfast, bread and cheese for snacks, or some farm raised meats and great fresh salad makings for dinner, you will not be disappointed. Of course, the opportunity to purchase locally made goods offers endless gifts for those looking to bring something home for friends and family as well.

Mark your calendars for the annual plant sale happening later this month in Highlands NC. This treasured event brings plants and flowers to the public. And, these plants and flowers have been grown by local gardeners, known to grow and thrive in our area. This is a fabulous opportunity to test your green thumb or expand your existing garden. Plants native to the Highlands Plateau make a difference and add great appeal to local gardens.

Mountain Garden Club Annual Plant Sale

When: Saturday, May 28
Where: Town Ball Field
Time: 9 am to noon

What are native plants?

Native plants hail from the Southern Blue Ridge area, those that thrive in the wild. Our soil and climate nurture these plants and allow them to do well in gardens that surround Highlands NC homes. The plants at the Mountain Garden Club’s sale will include Bee Balm, Astilbe, Clematis, Hosta, Cinnamon Ferns, and Dahlia bulbs, to name a few. In addition to plants, there will be experienced gardeners on hand offering an opportunity to ask questions and learn. Proceeds from the sale are used for scholarships for local students who are studying horticulture, environmental studies, and education, as well as for other community projects.

Enjoy food and wine in Highlands NC this week. The Highlands Food and Wine Festival will take place Thursday, November 7, through Sunday, November 10. Fantastic fare and fabulous wines, in addition to craft brews and specialty cocktails, accompanied by great music will be enjoyed. Additionally, there are always a few surprises. This fantastic event is one that the Highlands NC community looks forward to each year!

This year’s schedule:

  • Thursday, November 7, 7 to 10 pm, Grand Tasting
  • Friday, November 8, 12 to 3:30 pm, Truckin’
  • Saturday, November 9, 12 to 3:30 pm, Main Event
  • Sunday, November 10, 12 to 2:30 pm, Sunday Shindig

An additional event on Friday is the Sip and Shop. This is the opportunity to wander Main Street at your pace and enjoy gourmet bites and wine tasting at a variety of shops. This fun event allows you to enjoy our unique Downtown Highlands NC shops while still enjoying the festival’s excellent food and wine along the way!

Support Open Space in Highlands NC Later This Month

Support open space in Highlands NC later this month by partaking in two days of Satulah-bration! This fun event is all about celebrating and supporting the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust (HCLT) and the anniversary of the purchase of the summit of Satulah Mountain. The summit purchase was official on September 30, 1909. The Satulah-bration celebrates Satulah Mountain as well as all of the land that has been preserved by the HCLT to-date. Get out and join the Highlands and Cashiers community and have fun while supporting the HCLT!

What is the Satulah-bration?

The Satulah-bration is a two day event taking place on Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28. On Friday there will be a hike to the Satulah Preserve. No reservations are needed for this guided hike, simply show up to Founders Park and bring water and a lunch. The hike takes place from 10 am to 2 pm.

On Saturday there will be a Chili Cook-Off from 1 to 4 pm, also at Founders Park. This fun event will cost $10 to taste and judge. You may even want to cook some chili yourself and enter the competition! There will also be beer and treats for sale as well. Expect fun for all ages at this fabulous community event.

Get out and enjoy the Fourth of July fun in Highlands NC. Rockets, family games, hot dogs, and a rubber duck derby are just part of the fun! Of course, fireworks are also a main attraction, shooting high above when the skies get dark. If you are in town this week make sure you get out and enjoy the Highlands NC community.

 

Schedule of events for Thursday, July 4th

  • 9:00 to 10:45 am, Town of Highlands Ball Field, Boy Scout’s Annual Rocket Launch.
  • 11 am, Town of Highlands Ball Field, annual Town of Highlands Fourth of July Family Games.
  • 11 to 2 pm, Town of Highlands Ball Field, Highlands Rotary Club’s grilled hot dogs with chips and a drink, available for a donation.
  • 2 pm, Mill Creek, the Rubber Duck Derby sponsored by the Highlands Rotary Club. Buy a rubber duck to support the Rotary Club and have a chance to win fabulous prizes, not to mention bragging rights!
  • 6 to 8 pm, Kelsey-Hutchinson Park, free concert featuring Elonzo Wesley.
  • 8 pm, at the Presbyterian Church, annual Patriotic Sing with the Men’s Chorus
  • 9 pm, Fireworks, courtesy of the Highlands Chamber of Commerce

The Highlands NC area is a wonderful place to spend any holiday, especially Independence Day! Enjoy old fashioned family fun in the fresh mountain air and make your way to Downtown Highlands this Thursday, July 4.

Don’t miss the Highlands NC shrimp boil Saturday at Kelsey-Hutchinson Park. The Low Country Shrimp Boil is an annual fundraiser for the park. Enjoyed by the entire Highlands NC community the shrimp boil is a fun event that gets everyone out. There will a tent and the shrimp boil will take place rain or shine. If you are in town this weekend get to the park and join the fun!

 

When: Saturday, June 15
Where: Kelsey-Hutchinson Park on the plaza at the corner of Oak and Pine
Time: 5 to 8 pm

Friends of Founders Park is hosting the Low Country Shrimp Boil and encourages residents and visitors alike to come to join the fun to raise money for this well-loved gathering place. The cost for the event is $60 for a ticket that includes dinner, dessert, and two drinks. There are additional drink tickets available for $5 each as well. If you have not purchased tickets do not worry they will be on sale at the plaza as well. Click here for more information.

The Highlands Motoring Festival takes place this weekend. Arguably everyone’s favorite motoring festival in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this special event has something for everyone and all ages. From car enthusiasts and car owners to oglers and young children, everyone loves a classic car. If you will be in Highlands NC next weekend make sure you get out and enjoy at least part of the festival.

What can you expect to see at the Highlands Motoring Festival?

Over 125 classic cars will be on hand to view. Furthermore, there is a great variety of cars. The festival will include a driving tour through the mountains for the car owners, a car parade, live music, and cars in the park on display for all to view. There will be opportunities to ask the car owners questions and much more.

This fun annual event raises money for local charities. This year’s beneficiaries include REACH of Macon County, Literacy Council of Highlands, and the Community Care Clinic. While admission to view the cars is free donations are much appreciated. Join the Highlands NC community this weekend and enjoy the area’s favorite annual auto festival. Our mountain community is known for beautiful gardens. While many Highlands NC homes have ample space to landscape others do not. Get ready for Halloween in Highlands NC! The annual Halloween celebration is one which the Highlands NC community looks forward to each years. Open to all ages this is a time for costumes and fun. This year’s celebration takes place on Wednesday, October 31, from 6 to 8 pm. Fun family events and special holiday celebrations are part of what makes living in Highlands NC so special.

All Hallows Eve Celebration in Highlands NC is full of fun

What can you expect from Halloween in Highlands NC this year? A whole lot of fun with the Monster Mash on Main Street! Everyone will come dressed in costume. Some will be scary, some will be charming. The evening’s events will involve strolling down Main Street. Local businesses will be handing out candy. Halloween themed music will be playing and there will also be free hot dogs and drinks! This year’s Highlands NC All Hallows Eve Celebration is sponsored by the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.

The All Hallows Eve Celebration in Highlands NC showcases the creative nature of our community. There are so many wonderful opportunities for friends and neighbors to gather to celebrate In our wonderful mountain community. Take the time to get out and enjoy this year’s Halloween festivities!
